Rhythm King and her Friends (30.8.06 / Outdoors)Queer electronica, marvelous pop melodies with corners and edges, combine sampled rhythms and a playful use of different instruments and singing (in several languages, English, French and Bulgarian). Rhythm King and her Friends have something else in their mind. Instruments such as samplers, drum computers, guitar, bass and xylophone are used, in order to make music, embodied in the field of queer and gender Politics – Since the band’s formation a few years ago, the furore of their subversive mix of feminist manifesto with electronic sounds and beats erases any doubts. Loud and provocative, Rhythm King & Her Friends take a stand against conventional gender roles and parody the usual cliches: “What can I wear today? Choose my pants or shall I use my dress – everything looks queer today – I know I need some vacation from my boyish closet …” The duo plays with samples and digital equipment with as much ease as with guitars or megaphones. “The lithe, angular songs and megaphone-filtered polemics of the Berlin-based trio of politically-charged young women carry on where the DFA remix of Le Tigre’s “Deceptacon” left off.” (Wire) Their debut album that came out in April 2004 on Kitty-yo was followed by the release of remix EPs featuring remixes by Robots in Disguise, Ladytron and Stuart Price as well as ADA and M.I.A. Currently they are in the studio finalizing their second long player under the title “The Front of Luxury”, yet again to be released on Kitty Yo. Check out their official Homepage for further info.
