1. Participative Production - Safety Rules ...This is a magazine show that I produced with two other classmates and a bunch of school kids. We spent a couple of weeks working with the kids and teaching them how to use field recorders, conduct interviews and so on… Basically, we empowered these kids to be little journos, which was a great experience and loads of fun. This is a full show, complete with interviews and PSAs and everything, all made from material generated by these kids. They felt that safety was something important that ... 6/1/2010 2. A 5 Minute Documentary - Disruptive Beha...I did an intensive course in television production where we had to produce a 5 minute documentary in which we had to write the script, do the sound and shoot it ourselves. I chose to do it on a project that a friend of mine is currently working on which, if all goes well, could change the alcohol industry as we know it.
6/1/2010 3. A Docu-Drama ScriptThis is a script that I wrote as a radio play, and it was inspired by my great grandfather, Ronald Cayton. He was a member of the Transvaal Scottish and he fought in the Great War. In actual fact, he not only fought in the war, but he was one of the few men to have survived the Battle of Delville Wood, a battle in which South African regiments were massacred. The script draws on photos, letters and postcards from Ronald’s time in the army. I’ve kept the story as true as possible (l... 6/1/2010 4. A Voice Exercise - To Be SuccessfulThis is a voice exercise that I did in preparation for my audiobook reading, and I’ve posted it up here because I liked it… It also gives you a bit more of a chance to get to know me better.
6/1/2010 5. 2009 South African Elections PSA Campaig...I’ve put together a medley of all the PSAs that we produced in preparation for the 2009 elections. One of them is in Afrikaans, and another is in Xhosa, so I apologise in advance if you do not understand what’s being said.
6/1/2010 6. An Audiobook - Arthur: Nobody’s Ch...This is a chapter that I did from a childrens book - Arthur: High King of Britain by Michael Morpurgo. I did it with my cousins in mind, thinking that they’d enjoy it a whole lot. This is also one of my favourite pieces. The piece is quite long, so don’t start listening to it unless you have half an hour to spare.
6/1/2010 7. Rites of Passage - Getting your Driving ...This was one of my first pieces of work in my fourth year at university. The brief that we were given was to produce an audio documentary using “Rites of Passage” as a starting point. I chose to look at getting your driving license as a rite of passage, as it is something that affords us so much independence. Enjoy.
6/1/2010 9. Current Affairs Work - Makana Goat Proje...This is also an example of current affairs work that I did back in third year. It is also done in a development journalistic style, and in this story I look at a project that has an alternative way of creating sustainable development. This story was also shown in lectures as an alternative way to approaching development journalism.
5/30/2010 10. Current Affairs Work - Car Wash StoryNow, I realise that the whole point of current affairs is for them to be current. When I produced this story, it was current, and in all honesty I’m pretty sure this story could still be applicable now. What I did here was a form of development journalism, where you approach journalism from the grass roots, and not neccessarily use “experts” to qualify the story, but rather using the citizen as the “expert”. The aim of developmental journalism is to try and bring ab... 5/30/2010 Page 1 of 2 14 Episodes
