Carmen Acevedo Butcher is an author, poet, and teacher. A translator of Early Modern French, German, Latin, Middle English, and Old English, she has made accessible works by writers including Ælfric, The Cloud's Anonymous, Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, and Mechthild of Magdeburg. Her rendition of The Cloud of Unknowing (Shambhala Pocket Library, 2018) won an Author of the Year award from the Georgia Writers Association in 2010. Her tenth book, a translation of Presence by the seventeenth-century friar Lawrence, will be released by Broadleaf Books in 2021.
Carmen currently teaches in the College Writing Programs at UC Berkeley. As a Lecturer Teaching Fellow, she conducts workshops on inclusive language as praxis, and collaboration with Gen Z.
