Spirit of Trust – Episode 261

How do you trust in what you can not see? That is true faith, a spirit of trust. In this episode, we discuss how trusting in the Lord is a surefire way to have peace and tranquility in our lives.

Trust. That is a word that you may not use often. Usually, this happens because we have been hurt in the past. When we are hurt, concerned, or worried, we tend to put up our walls, and for many of us, these walls have turned into a fortress fortified with an uncrossable moat surrounding all sides. So, when people talk about God being love, God being our father, or even God being there with open arms, we don’t know what this means.

Now, let’s add to this thought the idea that we must trust in the Lord and His will for us! Having a spirit of trust allows the Lord to work through in us, and through us, it allows the Lord the right to purify us if need be. It says, “God – your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Sound familiar? This comes from the Lord’s prayer.

That is the goal, yet how do we get to the point of having a spirit of trust and trust in the Lord?

If you don’t have a relationship with Jesus, how can you trust what you do not know? Living a life without trust is like living a life without hope. We hope in what we see, what we can touch, and what we know to be true through experience. Yet, that is falling short of the life we can live.

Hebrews 11:1-3 talks about faith with assurance. (Read on air)

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. 2 For by it the men of old received divine approval. 3 By faith we understand that the world was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was made out of things which do not appear.

There is so much to unpack there!

First, there is a common element we have in our life that we hope for things. We hope for the best, or we hope things will work out the way they are supposed to work, or we hope that things won’t go as badly as we think.

Do you see how our progression of thought gets from good to bad? Often the enemy works on our weaknesses, and since we don’t want to get our hopes up, we aim low so we won’t be disappointed. Sound familiar?

How about having a Scripture ready in case our thoughts take a turn for the negative? Let’s aim to trust in the Lord with all our hearts!

Proverbs 3:5-6  (Read on air.) Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him,
    and he will make your paths straight

When we lean on our own understanding we can be led astray. Or how about fighting God’s will in our lives? Doing what is wrong when we know what we should do? How often do people think the 10 Commandments are only suggestions? When we fight the Lord and refuse to submit to doing what is right, we will most definitely find that we are on a well-worn path, and that does not lead to heaven! We want to be on the road less traveled, the road to heaven.

Who doesn’t want a path that is straight? We should aim high and ask the Lord for His best, which I guarantee (and there are not many guarantees in life) is way better than anything we can imagine. We stray off that path when we start doubting God’s best for us!

2 Corinthians 4: states, “…because we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen; for the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”

You must have a spirit of trust and of faith in order to see this truth. We can do this by seeking the Lord for our strength – 1 Chronicle 16:11. “Seek the Lord and his strength, seek his presence continually!” 

As I was working on this talk, I was hit with a question, “If I could see the Lord, and He was standing before me, would I recognize Him? So, I ask you the same thing. Think about all of the people who saw the Lord when he lived among the Jews and Gentiles. The Romans did not recognize Him and His chosen people, and the people of Israel (the Jews, especially those in charge) also did not. [As an aside, doesn’t it seem that those in charge often lead the people astray?]

Even if we saw the Lord would we believe and follow Him? Would you trust that what He was teaching was right and true? I would hope that I would and that you would as well! Let us pray that we have eyes that see!

Romans 8:24 – “For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?”

Again, faith is believing what we can not see but know it is true in our hearts, and this, my friends, is the grace God can give to each one of us, a gift of faith and a gift of trust.

It is better for us to live for the Lord rather than incur judgment at the end. Every one of us has seen hardship through the years. Each one of us has felt hopeless, abandoned, or misunderstood. Each one of us has lived through hurt and disappointment. You can’t get through this life without some type of hardship or trial.

Yet even a bad day in this world is better than sinning and living selfishly with only thoughts for yourself. This is why we need the grace of God, we need His blessing and His strength in our lives.

2 Corinthians 5:6-10 (Read on air.)

So we are always of good courage; we know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him. 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive good or evil, according to what he has done in the body.

Friends rejoice! Listening to this podcast is a good sign; you are following the road less traveled. You are choosing, again and again, to deny yourself, pick up your cross, and follow Him! We continue to ask and pray for the grace of God in our lives that will increase an infilling of the Holy Spirit and allow the Lord to work in us!

This week our challenge is studying, praying, and meditation on Hebrews 11 – and especially Hebrews 11:1-3. Our faith can grow, and in this way we will be open to trust in what the Lord has in store for us!
