We need to move beyond the concept of “changing the world” - which is often overwhelming and leads to apathy. Indeed, in many ways, we can’t change the world. AND this does not mean we do nothing.
When I was an activist against nuclear weapons in my teens and also advocating for environmental changes, this was the mentality - to change the world. And back then, in some ways, it was easier to do that.
But with some of the crises we are facing today, there are many things that are irreversible, and we can easily fall into despair.
An Island of Sanctuary is a place of refuge and community. As Margaret Wheatley says, “We can’t keep swimming alone in these toxic seas.”
