Marriage, divorce, remarriage: What the Bible teaches.

A divorced woman went to a pastor to see if she could remarry.  The pastor said, "My sister is divorced and remarried.  I don't see anything wrong with this."  So this divorced woman remarried.

 

Later this divorced/remarried woman saw what the Bible says about divorce and remarriage, and she was furious with that pastor who failed to tell her what the Bible says.

 

What the Bible says:

Jesus says to the men:

 

Matthew 5:32    But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.

 

* The woman who is faithful and marries another man after divorce, commits adultery, but her husband who divorced this faithful wife will be the cause of her adultery.

 

* The man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

Concerning women, Paul says the following is "a commandment of the Lord."

 

I Corinthians 7

 

10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:

11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife.

Mark 10

 

1 And HE (Jesus) arose from thence, and cometh into the coasts of Judaea by the farther side of Jordan: and the people resort unto Him again; and, as HE was wont, HE taught them again.

 

2 And the Pharisees came to Him, and asked Him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife? tempting HIM.

 

3 And HE answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you?

 

4 And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away.

 

5 And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept.

 

6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.

 

7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;

 

8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.

 

9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

 

10 And in the house His disciples asked Him again of the same matter.

 

11 And HE saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. 

 

12 And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery.

God hates divorce:

 

Malachi 2

 

14 Because the Lord hath been witness between thee and the wife of thy youth, against whom thou hast dealt treacherously: yet is she thy companion, and the wife of thy covenant.

 

15 And did not HE make one? Yet had he the residue of the spirit. And wherefore one? That HE might seek a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth. 

 

16 For the Lord, the God of Israel, saith that HE hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the Lord of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously.

Paul warns:  At the time of sexual intercourse, the two become one.

 

I Corinthians 6

 

15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.

 

16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith HE, shall be one flesh.

 

17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit,

 

18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.

Psalm 51:10  Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
