US non-farm payrolls (employment) rose by 151,000 in January (forecast: +190,000). But average hourly earnings rose by 0.5% (forecast +0.3%) and the jobless rate fell to an 8-year low of 4.9%.
US sharemarkets fell on Friday. While job gains fell short of forecasts, higher wages and lower unemployment keep the Federal Reserve poised to lift interest rates. Shares in Linkedin plunged 43.6% on a weak earnings forecast, with weakness dragging bellwether tech stocks lower such as Facebook (-5.8%), Alphabet (-3.6%) and Amazon (-6.4%). At the close of trade the Dow Jones was down by almost 212 points or 1.3% with the S&P 500 index down by 1.9% while the Nasdaq lost 146 points or 3.3%. Over the week the Dow lost 1.6%, the S&P 500 fell by 3.1% and the Nasdaq fell 5.4%
