Wake Up Tri-Counties Celebrating Juneteenth with the Kewanee Commission on Human Relations

June 19th is Juneteenth, a federal holiday marking the day that word on Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation reached the state of Texas, the last state in the nation to receive word of the end of slavery. Etta La Flora and Lakeshia Jones from the Kewanee Commission on Human Relations joined Wake Up Tri-Counties on this Juneteenth to talk about the history of Juneteenth, why and how it became a national holiday, and what we can do to mark the occasion. The Kewanee Commission on Human Relations is planning events for the day in the future. For today, the remembrance was spent with WKEI as Lakeshia Jones shared a lovely Juneteenth Poem and Etta La Flora shared the history that inspired that poem, on Wake Up Tri-Counties.
