the Feeling of Magic and Psychology with Visual Artist Gabriel J. Shuldiner
“Life is too short to not do what you love” — Gabriel J. Shuldiner
We deep dive into the topics of painting, perseverance, success, social media hacks, psychology rabbit holes, and what it looks like and how it feels to be an artist. We explore the journey and process of the visual artist Gabriel J. Shuldiner, how it aligns with the music industry and actors in the Entertainment Industry. We chat about business deals, how they happen and how they manifest while creating and then not knowing how it will all turn out. A true conversation on the life of an artist with authenticity, ethics, morals, and values.
I am so happy and proud to share this prolific story with Gabriel J. Shuldiner.
Interested in the timeless and disparate associations assigned to black, Gabriel J. Shuldiner describes his work as ‘bruteminimalism®’: a concept situated somewhere between the abstract and absurd. Shuldiner's physically powerful, s[r]eductively delicate ‘hybridsculpturalpaintings®’ trigger both immediate engagement and visceral reaction, conjuring images of voids in space and post-apocalyptic futures...
Gabriel sites the 'subtlety of difference, produced through repetition' and the 'implied nuanced histories of the oft-overlooked as starting points for work that explores and disrupts 21st-century painting and object-making. Gabriel J. Shuldiner deems his elusive black palette "postapocalypticblack®": a viscous custom composite, based upon the key life ingredient and oldest known earth element [c] carbon [pigment].
Applied in thick layers on a multitude of substrates, Gabriel J. Shuldiner meticulously bends, scrapes and sculpts his proprietary black material, creating mysterious areas both smooth and rough that proportionately reflect, refract, distort, and absorb observable levels of electromagnetic radiation.
His ongoing oeuvre examines the physical and psychological qualities of visual experience through the use of black paint.
A native New Yorker, Gabriel J. Shuldiner was born and raised in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. He holds a bachelor of arts in business and philosophy from New York University and a master of fine arts in painting and sculpture from Parsons the New School for Design. He has previously studied at the School of Visual Arts and International Center for Photography... Upon graduating from Parsons, Gabriel J. Shuldiner was selected by the Bronx Museum of the Arts 'AIM' [Artist in the Marketplace] emerging artist program, and the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts studio residency program, where he spent several years.
Gabriel J. Shuldiner lives and works in Manhattan’s West Chelsea, where he currently maintains his studio.
