Today’s word is: credentials. Would you like to know what it means? It means: the abilities and experience that make someone suitable for a particular job or activity, documentary proof of someone's achievements, qualification, background and experience.

In this English vocabulary lesson you will learn how to use the word credentials. We are sure that this ESL lesson will help you to enhance your English vocabulary and speak English fluently and confidently.

The word credentials is used while referring to a person’s qualifications and achievements. The credentials of a person qualify him for taking up a particular position or executing a task.

For example, Medha was selected to the advisor committee due to her credentials as a post graduate in economics, 

Listen carefully how we can use the word credentials in 8 different situations in 8 different sentences.

Example number 1 of 8: The company shortlisted a few candidates for the job of a product sales executive. They all had the same credentials. To finalise a candidate, the interview panel asked each of them to give a presentation on a given topic and the most competent and confident person was selected.

Example number 2 of 8: Kapil Dev played for India for twenty years and was the captain of the world cup winning team in 1983. These credentials earned him the Padma Bhushan award in 1991.

Example number 3 of 8:  The judge asked for a competent authority to certify the credentials of the witness as a financial expert. It was essential because the statement of the witness was a crucial parameter in arriving at the final judgement.

Example number 4 of 8:  Rehan joined a team of professional musicians. Initially, he was not included in large scale live performances. But, he meticulously practised with the band for a year and proved his credentials as a competent musician.

Example number 5 of 8:  Mr. Mehra addressed a batch of students at an MBA institute. He emphasised on the fact the credentials of a professional are built over a period of time through sincerity, commitment, knowledge and achievements. He also advised them never to compromise on their professional values.

Example number 6 of 8:  Two very senior managers were being considered for the post of the managing director. Both faced a comprehensive interview by the chairman. Then, at the final stage, both contenders were asked to make a presentation to the board of directors to establish their credentials for claiming the position.

Example number 7 of 8: Mr. Jogalekar had successfully run a bank for more than a decade as its CEO. The government recognised his credentials as someone who has in depth knowledge of economy and financial services. Therefore, he was invited to be a part of the delegation travelling overseas with the prime minister.

Example number 8 of 8:  The World Chess Federation was looking for a brand ambassador to promote the game of chess. After scrutinising several prominent names, it appointed Mr. Karpov to the post. His credentials are a distinguished and long international career with Three wins in World cup matches.
