Today’s word is: impulse. The meaning of impulse is: a sudden and strong desire to act, the influence of a particular feeling or mental state, a trigger that causes something to happen, a short electrical or radio signal.

The word impulse relates to an emotion which makes one act suddenly without much thinking. It also means a trigger point that results in sudden happening of an event.

For example, on hearing the sound of an explosion, public’s first impulse was to run away. But, many of them decided to stay back and help others.

Listen carefully how we can use the word impulse in 8 different situations in 8 different sentences.

Example number 1 of 8:  Ajit learnt about the extraordinary amenities provided by the neighbouring state for businessmen. On an impulse, he thought of shifting his present business there. However, his father advised him to check the feasibility through a trial run and then take the final decision.

Example number 2 of 8: It was observed at a beach that the tourists often had an impulse to jump from an edge into the sea. This was extremely dangerous and therefore, the local tourist operators carried out a campaign to educate the tourists and prevent the same.

Example number 3 of 8:  The captain of the cricket team was thinking about ways to defeat the opponents. Just before the start of the match, he decided on an impulse to include a spin bowler in the team. His tactics worked well and batting of the opposition collapsed like a pack of cards.

Example number 4 of 8: Financial advisors often caution people to use their credit cards carefully. They warn that an owner of a credit card may spend excessive amounts on impulse and can get trapped in heavy debt.

Example number 5 of 8:  There was no movement from the enemy camp.  Major Verma became suspicious and on an impulse, he ordered his soldiers to fire a round of bullets. This exposed the enemy soldiers hidden in the nearby bushes and they were chased away.

Example number 6 of 8:  The Managing Director of the company was extremely disturbed due to the falling market share. As an impulsive measure, he decided to slash the product prices to regain the market position. However, his chief financial officer asked him to reconsider his decision.

Example number 7 of 8:  The patient was brought to the hospital in a completely unconscious state. While he was examined, his heart stopped functioning. The doctors immediately used a machine which imparted electrical impulses and revived the functioning of the heart.

Example number 8 of 8: You will often notice that chocolates and small gift articles are kept near the billing counter in big shops and supermarkets. The rationale behind this positioning is to encourage the shoppers to buy these articles on impulse and this strategy has worked successfully most of the times.
