The Ecocide Report Episode 9: July 2024

Welcome to Episode 9 of The Ecocide Report!

 

In this episode Chidi and Jojo recap some ecocide law highlights from Feb - July 2024, including The Office of the Prosecutor’s public consultation on how the ICC should advance accountability for environmental crimes, the European Union adopting a new environmental crimes directive criminalising actions comparable to ecocide, new domestic ecocide legislation in Belgium and new bills proposed in  Italy and Peru, recent speeches by ICC Deputy Prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan and UN High Commissioner Volker Türk endorsing an international crime of ecocide, the Escazú Agreement's third COP meeting, and a successful webinar on combating environmental crime in Africa. 

 

Also discussed was SEI CEO, Jojo Mehta's Helsinki trip which featured meetings with diplomats and a sold-out Choirs for Ecocide Law concert and the indelible  the ONE DRESS: PLANET project by Lucy Tammam - raising awareness for ecocide law. Upcoming events covered include Jojo's NYC visit for UNSDG HLPF in July, September’s Summit for the Future and NY Climate Week!
