S2E4 Our words matter - Part 1

This two-part series touches base on all sorts of areas involved in how we speak: to others, about others, our tone, how we speak in anger, and what the Bible has to say about all the speech-related-topics!

1. How we speak to people matters (in front of them and behind their backs)

• Ephesians 4:29 “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” 

• Psalm 19:14 Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

2. What we say in our anger is not excusable

• It’s not like “free calories” at the fair
• James 1:26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person's religion is worthless.
• Prov 16:32 Whoever is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit more than he who takes a city.
• Matthew 12:37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
• Matthew 12:36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak

3. The tone of our voice matters as much as the words

• A dog as an example 

• Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Challenge: Pay attention to what pricked your heart when listening. What made you defensive? Zero in on that and bring it to God.
