Dan Misener at Bumper has learned that every podcast has an average lifetime value score, which goes up and down depending on the promotion your podcast gets (and whether it’s any good). The score has been added to the Bumper Dashboard. Want a peek at ours? For the Podnews Weekly Review, you can see a significant jump in new audience when we had Jeanine Wright from Inception Point AI on (Sep 26), and we’re seeing more new audience on Apple Podcasts recently. Apple Podcasts listeners are more loyal, too; but Spotify’s slowly creeping up. Podcast diversity is ‘woeful’, says new report
Sponsored by Beamly. Still renting your listeners? Own your members, content and income with Beamly - 0% platform fees and no lock‑in. Start free today 64% of the hosts of the most popular US podcasts of 2024 were men - and the top shows are significantly less diverse than the top movies, TV or music, a report from USC Annenberg’s Inclusion Initiative says. Shows with video are more likely to have male hosts; the worst gender balance is with business and technology podcasts, where men host 92% of shows. Women-hosted podcasts are more than twice as likely to have female guests - but even so, guests on women-hosted podcasts are still 54% male. The document describes the lack of non-white hosts as “woeful”. The study notes that true crime shows are most likely to be hosted by women - who host 53% of the top shows. That good news is slightly blunted by the fact that these shows are the least diverse at 90% white, and, of course, “stories focus on grisly acts often committed against women”. Podcast Movement will be free to attend this March, at SXSW in Austin TX, it’s been announced in Sounds Profitable; with details of a new format, and the event’s values. “If you loved the hotel-based format of Podcast Movement, 2026 is going to feel like a departure,” says Bryan Barletta. The piece also outlines the event’s approach to diversity. (Podnews has a 50% business partnership with Podcast Movement). Spotify’s Megaphone has renewed its IAB Podcast Measurement Guidelines Certification. The company was already on v2.2; the new certification was added to the IAB’s website yesterday. Parent company Spotify abruptly pulled all IAB certification in April last year; only to change its mind two months later. > > > Read more of today’s podcast industry news stories on the Podnews website: and get our free daily newsletter.Classifieds - your job or ad hereBook Some Time with John Wordock — Hope to end 2025 strong? 20-year pro John Wordock lives where content strategy meets audience and revenue. Study: is video worth doing for your podcast?
Sponsored by Beamly. You don’t need more tools. You need one that works. Beamly provides podcast hosting, website, memberships and products - all in one platform. Measured by the cost of an “hour of attention”, producing video as well as audio for your podcast costs +77% more than audio alone. Producing video increases staffing levels by around +50%, and increases production costs 3.6x. But is video worth it? A new study from the Podcast Marketing Academy with Lower Street, using data from more than 300 respondents, suggests that audio remains a powerful tool for maintaining attention; but adding video can drive additional consumption for both video and audio versions. It’s a helpful, detailed report, worth your time. Facebook’s Twitter-like clone, Threads, has announced that it is testing support for linking to podcasts. The test is rolling out, with “plans to support more platforms soon”. It appears that it only supports Spotify: here’s an example of a post, and an example of a profile. You can link anywhere anyway so this tool currently only appears to make it look prettier, or no longer have to pin a post to the top of your profile. Still, Threads apparently has 400mn monthly active users - so prettier links are nice. TuneIn has been acquired by Canadian broadcaster Stingray for as much as US $175mn. TuneIn maintains live radio and podcast databases used by companies like Apple, Google and auto manufacturers, but has made multiple layoffs over the past few years, and removed the ability for podcasters to submit new podcasts into its database in February 2024. > > > Read more of today’s podcast industry news stories on the Podnews website: and get our free daily newsletter.Classifieds - your job or ad hereHow I grew TWO podcasts past 500,000 downloads. — Hey Pod Pals! tiktok gets into podcasting
Sponsored by Beamly. Stop giving Patreon a cut. Beamly hosts your private podcasts and enables memberships with 0% platform fees. Your content, members and income - All yours. Get started free TikTok is coming to podcasting, with the announcement of the TikTok Podcast Network, containing up to 25 new shows hosted by TikTok creators. TikTok is working with iHeartMedia, who will create co-branded, state of the art video-capable podcast studios in LA, NY and Atlanta. The companies will also launch radio stations and live events. Podcasting is “probably the hottest category of media right now”, according to iHeart CEO Bob Pittman. iHeartMedia announced its financial report for Q3/25. Podcast revenue grew +22.5% year-on-year to $139.7mn. About half of iHeart’s podcasting advertising revenue came from iHeart’s local sales force - that figure was 11% in Q3/20. Podcasting contributed a record 14% to the business's revenue; “We believe we have the most profitable podcasting business in the United States.” The “multiplatform group”, which runs the radio stations, saw revenue down 5%. The company announced an additional $50mn of savings for next year. Two announcements in the past twenty-four hours show radio companies focusing on digital ad buys: Ad-buying platform StackAdapt announced an integration with iHeartMedia to incorporate broadcast radio into its programmatic ad-planning tools. AM/FM radio continues to hold 64% of all daily ad-supported audio listening. Meanwhile, J-ET, the UK radio trading system, has added digital audio trading (including podcasts) to its tool, working with Global’s DAX and Bauer’s AudioXI. J-ET has been digitally trading linear radio since 2002, and handles more than 98% of national radio sales in the country. > > > Read more of today’s podcast industry news stories on the Podnews website: and get our free daily newsletter.Classifieds - your job or ad hereShould you change your podcast name? — Discover the proven signals that show when a new name can grow your audience and when it will stall your progress. 85% of indie podcasters aren’t monetising
Sponsored by Beamly. You don’t need more tools. You need one that works. Beamly. 85% of indie podcasters aren’t making money, according to The Independent Podcaster Report 2025, published today by Alitu. But - this isn’t bad news: only 9% of those who took part consider revenue and profitability as their primary measure of success. Clear evidence - if we needed it - that we’re not all in it for the money. Most spend 4-5 hours working on each episode. The biggest threats to podcasting is increased competition and the use of AI, the study says. At the BBC, the Director General (CEO) Tim Davie, and the Head of News Deborah Turness, have resigned after allegations of bias were published by the right-wing Telegraph newspaper. One specific allegation is that the BBC's flagship Panorama programme misleadingly edited two parts of a Donald Trump speech together, so the US President appeared to be encouraging the Capitol Hill riot of January 2021. The BBC is one of the largest podcasters in the UK, with an equivalent total of 154mn podcast downloads a month (including on-demand radio), and launched a BBC Verify service in 2023 to “combat the growth of disinformation”. The Audio Dramatists Resource Guide 2026-2027 has been published. The guide “connects audio dramatists with production companies actively seeking scripts, along with a wealth of development opportunities, contests, and fellowships across the US, UK, Canada, and beyond.” > > > Read more of today’s podcast industry news stories on the Podnews website: and get our free daily newsletter.Classifieds - your job or ad herePodcast Growth & Monetization tips every Thursday! — Subscribe to the FREE Podcasting Business School newsletter and get fresh tips every Thursday for podcast growth, monetization, and online business strategies.
