When I first got signed up as a distributor one of the first people I signed up was Nicole Jones. Within the first couple months of Nicole’s business, Nicole signed up Tony Furtado. Tony was one of those distributors that you just hope for. He ran with this business right away. If you look at this playing out, it’s me signing up, then I signed up Nicole right away (who has had enormous success), then, Nicole signs up Tony and he goes on to have enormous success! It was one of those times in my business that there was just massive growth happening and during that massive growth, this guy Tony signs up and right from the start, Tony was a born leader. Tony was somebody who wanted to do this business. He wanted to do it a hundred percent. He wanted to run with it and Nicole and I had to just get out of Tony’s way. The biggest mistake we can make with leaders who are fully ready to run with this business on their own is trying to hold them back, trying to tell them “You should do it this way. When you’re mentoring people one-on-one, you have to have an upfront understanding with them. An agreement about the rules of the game. All of this is positioned and laid out for someone you are mentoring during your recruiting and your ‘getting started right’ process. You’re going to want them to know that you’re the mentor. You’re the one who is going to be telling them and showing them what to do. I also want them to know right away that I’m not going anywhere, that they can depend on me. I also want to know from them that they’re not going anywhere, that I can depend on them, that they’re going to show up, that their word is good, that they’re going to do what they say they’re going to do, because I’m not going to babysit them. It was the first corporate sponsored training I had been to in my network marketing business. I had just driven 12 hours from Boston to Washington DC with a few of my downline distributors and my personal sponsor for a weekend event. To say I was excited about the event would be a huge understatement. I couldn’t wait to learn and get all the details of how to succeed in this new industry I was in. We get into the training at 8:00 on Saturday morning and I’m mesmerized by the man leading the training. One of the concepts he talked about really stuck with me and helped to mold the philosophy I now teach on building a network marketing business. “You’re really only looking for 5 people.”  That's it..
