Did you know…
- Conaill Ó Cuinn, a Galway man, was randomly selected to be part of the EU Citizens Panel on Energy Efficiency days after purchasing an electric car.
- The European Citizens’ Panel on Energy Efficiency took place over three weekends between February and April 2024.
- The European Citizens’ Panel on Energy Efficiency has now submitted its recommendations to the European Commission.
Why is it important for the EU to have a Citizens’ Panel on Energy Efficiency?
- The panel brings together a diverse group of citizens from across the member states. This allows the EU to gather public perspectives and lived experiences on energy efficiency.
- Citizens with no prior experience in policy creation can bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table. They might propose approaches that policymakers wouldn't have considered otherwise.
- By involving citizens in the discussion, the EU can build trust and public ownership of energy efficiency goals. When people feel they've had a say in shaping policies, they're more likely to support and comply with them.
What can I do to support the EU Citizens’ Panel on Energy Efficiency?
- The European Commission website allows you to contact them directly [Europa.eu website]. You can express your support for citizen engagement in policymaking and encourage them to continue initiatives like the Citizens' Panel.
- There are many ways to save energy at home and in your daily activities. Research energy-saving tips and implement them in your own life.
- Look for NGOs and advocacy groups working on energy efficiency issues in the EU.
