There is so much to talk about this week.
Continued fallout and discussion of Trev Alberts leaving for Texas A&M - thrown directly in our face because the NCAA selection committees for both men’s and women’s basketball has chosen to put Nebraska up against the Texas A&M Aggies in both sports in the opening round of the NCAA tourneys.
Matt Rhule had his opening press conference today for spring football, and boy was it a doozy. He wants to be in Nebraska. His son is going to school at UNL and his wife is starting a business in Lincoln. Is that proof enough?
That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
There’s the NCAA Wrestling Championship coming up this week. There’s Nebraska baseball.
There’s a whole lot of fun going on. It’s an amazing time to be alive.

I didn’t have Trev Alberts leaving on my 2024 bingo card. So there’s that. Look, I know there are going to be plenty of questions about why and who’s next. But in this episode, we’re going to talk about:
Women’s basketball loses in OT to that team over there, settling for B1G Tournament runners-up. Men’s basketball ends regular season with a road win and ranked third in the conference. Hoiberg shares coach of the year honors with Matt Painter of Purdue, and how the transitive property should have shut that $#!& down. And there’s also a couple Huskers who received some all-conference honors.
And since last week, Greg watched Napoleon and found an intriguing link between that movie (and history) and where we are today in the landscape of college athletics. Did Minnie really sacrifice an entire Monday night watching it for no reason?
Chatterfields, mount up. I don’t think we’ll see Jon this week either.

We’re back for our second show tonight following the Huskers return from the Razorback Rumble in Fayetteville and also two games earlier today down in Lincoln.
They are in town this weekend as well for the Big Red Spring Classic where they will play Northern Colorado (again), North Dakota and Creighton (ew).
We will review last weekend, preview the next, mock an opposing fan, celebrate all the Husker Katelyns (multiple spellings) and talk about Billie Andrews’ amazing season thus far.

It was a fairly decent weekend for Nebraska Athletics as the wrestling team finished third in the Big Ten in the Big Ten Wrestling Tournament with Ridge Lovett claiming a Big Ten Championship at 149 pounds.
The Nebraska men’s basketball team beat Michigan on the road and it was almost like an afterthought for everybody. They beat Michigan soundly, playing well in the process and they have the right momentum going into the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament this week as the number three seed which means they will have two byes.
The Husker women’s basketball team took Iowa to overtime in the Big Ten title game, unfortunately didn’t finish and win, but against the number three team in the nation, that’s a pretty good representation.
The Nebraska track and field men’s and women’s team both finished in the top 25 and out of 12 Husker entries, eight earned first team All-America honors by placing in the top eight.

This week on the Five Heart Podcast, Jon, Minnie, and Greg are joined by Kevin Knight, one-time basketball writer for Corn Nation and lifelong Big Ten Country dweller.
A Spartan by birth, Kevin will join us to talk about Nebraska’s incredible season. And since the regular season finale is against the Michigan Wolverines, a team he’s hated since birth, there’s no shortage of schadenfreude at Michigan’s expense.
But being a Big Ten lifer, Kevin shares his opinion on the history of men’s basketball in the conference (is it historically the best basketball conference?) as well as offer an insider’s opinion to the continued expansion of the league.
Chatterfields…Mount up!

On our opening show we’ll discuss the Huskers opening tournaments (and just what those are), including The Big Red Invitational which wasn’t the homecoming anyone wanted. The Razorback Rumble is next and has already hit a hitch. We also hope to bring up a rule/factoid/etc. each week where we’ll dive a little deeper into the differences between fast-pitch softball and baseball.
Besides the funny throwing motion and the bigger ball.
And, of course, we’ll discuss Jordy Bahl’s injury and ensuing surgery and the effects on the team both short-term and long-term.
I’m Andy Ketterson, your host and I’ll be joined by Mylie Ketterson tonight and also Jaden Miller in the ensuing weeks.
So drop by, chime in and give us and Nebraska Cornhuskers softball a shot if you will.

Keisei Tominaga, Josiah Allick and Boogie Coleman all walked on senior night and C. J. Wilcher was honored. So is this the last we’ll see of Tommy Naga, probably the most exciting charismatic player in Nebraska basketball history? We’ll have to wait and see.
The Nebraska baseball team swept the College of Charleston over the weekend and Todd will have updates on that.

This go-around on the Five Heart Podcast, Greg and Minnie discuss the Nebraska men’s basketball game that would have concluded by show time. The Huskers are in Columbus, OH to take on an Ohio State University, which has seen a change of luck since they fired their head coach.
After the game against the Buckeyes, the men only have two regular season games remaining.
The Husker WBB team has one regular season game remaining, a road game Sunday against Illinois. Nebraska beat the Illini by eight points ack on January 11 and have won three in a row and five of their seven contests in February.
And I don’t know if you’re up to speed on the Chasing 3 YouTube series, but a recent episode shed some light on Nash Hutmacher’s return to wrestling, signing day and move-in day, Ty Robinson’s decision to return to Nebraska for his final year, and cooking with the freshmen!

Nebraska sports had an excellent weekend. Nebraska men’s basketball had a very dominant win over the Minnesota Gophers and it solidified Fred Hoiberg’s position as Big Ten Coach of the Year.
Will he get it or not? Who knows, but he deserves it.
But up until the game against Minnesota, Ben Johnson from Minnesota was another great candidate.
The Football players had a dunk contest at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Minnesota, and WHEN is the last time we had athletes showing off their talents at another athletic event?
The baseball team went 3-1 with a series win over Grand Canyon University.
Men’s track and field finished second in the Big Ten.
Women finished 8th.
Nebraska softball (8-6) finished with a 2-3 record in the tournament while playing three ranked teams and five teams that made the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
And look at all this stuff from the athletic department notes after the men’s basketball win against Minnesota:
Nebraska improved to 20-8 on the season, matching its best 28-game start in the Big Ten era (also 2017-18).It is the seventh time Nebraska has won 20-or-more games in the regular season (also 1919-20, 1977-78, 1965-66, 1990-91, 1992-93 and 2017-18).
* Nebraska tied a school record with its 17th home win, which had been done three other times in school history. Nebraska is 17-1 at Pinnacle Bank Arena this season.
*-Nebraska has now won 10 Big Ten games, marking only the third time since joining the conference that NU has reached double figures in conference wins.
*-Nebraska held Minnesota to a season-low 55 points as its previous low was 58 at San Francisco on Nov. 26. Minnesota entered Sunday’s game averaging 76.7 points per game.
*-Nebraska has won four straight Big Ten games by at least 15 points including tonight’s 18-point victory. This marks the first time Nebraska has won four straight conference games by 15 or more points since winning four straight Missouri Valley Conference games by at least 15 points in 1911-12.
*-Nebraska last won four straight conference games by double figures in 1998-99 when the Huskers won four straight Big 12 games by at least 13 points.
*-Juwan Gary posted a career high with 22 points, betting his previous career high of 20 on two other occasions. Gary also had a career-high four 3-pointers, topping his previous best of three on two other occasions.
*-Nebraska is 15-0 this season when holding opponents under 70 points and has won 19 straight dating back to last season.

The Nebraska Men’s basketball team once again successfully defended the home court Saturday when they defeated Penn State. It’s back on the road Wednesday night against the Indiana Hoosiers, with a good opportunity to pick up that elusive Big Ten road win. By the time we do the show, we’ll know just how successful the attempt was. *Update - it was very successful.
Meanwhile, the Nebraska women’s basketball program is facing some unplanned scrutiny. While the team has won two in a row and four of its last six, it is accusations from the past that have popped up, putting a black eye on arguably Amy Williams’ finest season to date as the head coach of the Husker women. They will continue to prepare for Saturday’s game against Minnesota amid the lawsuits levied against Williams, the former assistant coach, AD Trev Alberts, and the University.
And how do you fight idiots online? One school of thought is to ignore them completely. But Greg saw something this week so repugnant that he could not let it slide. So prepare for rants against recency bias and click bait. IT WILL NOT BE CONDONED!
