Bjørn Egge var en kriger for fred. Engasjementet for fredsbygging og menneskelig forsoning gikk som en rød tråd gjennom livet hans.

Som ung befalsskoleelev deltok han i kampene i Sør-Norge, og senere i illegalt motstandsarbeid. Han ble tatt til fange av nazistene og satt i flere konsentrasjonsleirer før han ble hentet ut fra Sachsenhausen av Røde Kors med De hvite bussene. Da hadde han vært krigsfange i tre år.
