Prof. John Lowe is an Associate Professor of Sanskrit in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at the University of Oxford. He talks to Hussain about how he became interested in language development, and how he came to study Sanskrit language and linguistics. He discusses the way language is so powerful, and the way written language can preserve older things, can prevent change or can undo change. Listen to hear John explore the way language changes over time, and how words are constantly changing and being remade through their translation from speech to writing. He draws on the influence texting has had here, and where this is heading. In this fascinating episode we learn about the way he is comparing ancient Indian linguistic tradition to modern western linguistic tradition, and the human knowledge that can be derived from this.
