I’m excited to announce a new local podcast. It’s COS ’23: The Mayor’s Race.
This Spring, Colorado Springs is guaranteed to have a new Mayor for the first time since 2015. Mayor John Suthers is term limited and the field to replace him is crowded. Twelve candidates have announced they’re running and I'll take a look at all of them, including individual episodes of who I believe are the top seven candidates.
From the candidates I interview, we’ll hear why they want to be Mayor, what issues they think are most important, and why you should vote for them. And I’ll have guest experts on the show as we look at the race and the important issues.
I'm going to take a balanced look at the candidates. I won’t endorse anyone. I simply want to present the candidates and issues in enough detail for voters to make an informed decision.
I decided to do this show because this is a pivotal election for our city. Colorado Springs has enjoyed strong growth and a bigger presence nationally over the past several years. But the national economy is unpredictable right now and there are several critical issues facing our city that the next Mayor will need to address.
I’d also like to see more people vote. The last time Colorado Springs had a mayoral election – in 2019 – we had 37.1% voter turnout. That’s the lowest turnout in a mayoral race since Colorado Springs adopted the Strong Mayor form of government in 2010.
I’ve lived in Colorado Springs since 1991 and love it here. I’ve worked on more than 60 local political campaigns since 1997, including four mayoral races and several City Council races. I’m a small business owner, I’ve served on city boards, volunteered on projects that partnered with the city and worked on numerous ballot issues that I thought would benefit our quality of life and future. I care about this city. I hope you do too.
The first candidate interview drops Saturday, February 11. Then I'll drop one candidate interview per day for six days. After that, we’ll have weekly episodes that look at the other candidates, key issues and what’s happening on the campaign trail.
