Weekend Series Won: The Angels got help Sunday from Joel Pineiro's best start of the 2011 season and Jordan Walden's 28th save of the year for a 4-1 victory and series win over the Minnesota Twins. Pineiro gave up only five hits and one run from a solo home run courtesy Joe Mauer's second of the year.
Pitching Predictions: Anthony Vazquez has accomplished a lot at age 25 but has shown inexperience on the mound with runners in scoring position. Vazquez took the loss on August 30th after a difficult outing. Look for the veteran Dan Haren to establish himself early if the Angels can secure control of the game by inning four.
Calm Olivo and Smoak: These two Mariners have hot bats and motivation despite the playoff positioning of their team. Their ability to extend at bats and clean up in key situations define the success of the Mariners.
Speed and Control: Youth has been a spark for the Angels. Bourjos, Trumbo, Walden, and new September call ups must all be ready when called on to deliver. Taking advantage of big opportunities will be crucial to chasing down the 3.5 game Texas lead in the American League West.
Labor Day Baseball: The Mariners face the Angels again with a 6:05 first pitch time (PST) on Angels Radio, AM 830. Angels Today with Steve Carroll and Jose Mota begins at 4:00 on air and online at www.am830.net streaming live.
Angels Warm-Up follows at 5:00.
Tuesday and Wednesday game times are 7:05. Thursday is an off day before the Angels host the Yankees for a very patriotic weekend series.
