"Jesus Mighty and Everlasting."
December 17th, 2017 -Pastor Keith Cromie
Who is Jesus? Where can we go to find the answer? Why does the Manger in first-century Bethlehem really matter?
Truth be told all those questions are connected. Who Jesus is and why the manger matters are linked for eternity. As to where we can go to get the answer; we go to the Scriptures that will endure forever. Those writings will always tell the truth about our Lord and Savior.
Last Sunday we explored the title Wonderful Counselor from Isaiah’s prophecy (9:6-7). This Sunday we dive deeper into the wonderful mystery of Jesus through the portals to additional titles from Isaiah’s quill. Mighty God and Everlasting Father.
In some ways these titles can confuse. But with proper understanding, these designations of the Savior provide an avalanche of enlightenment and encouragement.
Let’s dive into God’s Word together on Sunday morning.
See below some Scriptures that will help prepare your mind and heart for our study of God’s Word.
Is. 9:6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Is. 9:7 Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Is. 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
and to him who has no might he increases strength.
Is. 41:10 fear not, for I am with you;
be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Luke 1: 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy— the Son of God.
