The Parkland Men celebrated a six spot move up the rankings Wednesday, as they pulled away for an 82-70 win over a scrappy Illinois Central squad. The Blazers currently have a one game lead over both Parkland and Danville with three games to play.
The game was a back and forth affair early, as PC would break from a 23-23 tie to take a 30-23 lead with 5:45 remaining. The Cobras would push the lead to as many as twelve at 41-29, but ICC closed out the half scoring the final five points and PC took a 41-34 lead into halftime. ICC would start the 2nd like they finished the first and eventually cut the PC lead to 48-46 with 14:35 to go before the Cobras would go on an impressive 16-2 run to take control of the game. Quin Nottingham came off the bench and drained three 3’s during the stretch to push the lead to 64-48 with 11:33 remaining. The Cougars would close the gap to just six at 73-67 with 3:45 left in the game but Jordache Mavunga and Marcus Latham would hit 4 consecutive free throws to seal the win.
Nottingham paced the Cobras with 20 points while Marcus Latham added 18 points, 7 board, and 3 assists. Mavunga also finished in double figures with 16 points. Isaiah Curry grabbed 11 boards while Darin Bellinger (8 points 6 rebounds) and Dirk Jordan (5 points 7 rebounds) both gave the Cobras some key minutes off the bench. The Cobras shot 45% on the night from the field and made 21-27 from the line. PC also outrebounded the Cougars 42-35. PC had to overcome a career night from ICC’s Ian Milstadt who had 33 points and chased down 9 rebounds.
