Episode 5: Talking Labyrinths with Laura Young
This week, Dawna's guest is Laura Young, a docent of the Labyrinth program at the historic Brookgreen Gardens here in South Carolina.
In this episode, Laura shared with us the history and uses for labyrinths as well as the events they have coming up at the gardens. Labyrinths have been used to enrich the lives of autistic children as well as people in hospice. They have also been paired with Tai Chi and yoga practices.
Laura and the other docents at Brookgreen Gardens have a vision for the expansion of the labyrinth program. As a result they seek the assistance of musicians (think sound healing/instrumental), artists (to construct a mobile labyrinth on canvas), and Tai Chi and yoga instructors who are willing to volunteer their time to make that vision a reality. If you or someone you know would like to connect with Laura, she can be contacted via email.
Upcoming Events at the labyrinth at Brookgreen Gardens:
Join us as we welcome summer with a group labyrinth walk. The sun will reach its highest position of the year and share its light as we walk on Brookgreen's labyrinth in a beautiful, natural setting. We will gather at the Brookgreen layrinth at 11 am for the walk. If you are mobility-challenged, please be at the Lowcountry Center picnic table area by 10:45 am for transport to the labyrinth (subject to golf car availability). Please note: The event will be cancelled for safety reasons if there is substantial rain on or immediately before the day of the walk.
Brookgreen Gardens does offer a monthly opportunity (3rd Saturday of each month, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm) to experience the Labyrinth with a Docent available to answer questions and introduce new walkers. "All are welcome!"
Please note: Due to the fact that the labyrinth at Brookgreen Gardens is located on a creek, it is sometimes closed when weather conditions indicate safety concerns. For those who are interested in visiting the labyrinth, a quick call to the Welcome Center at 843-235-6000 can assist one in determining its current status.
Next week, Dawna's guest will be Tina Hayden of the Hayden Heals Foundation.
