Today’s word is: preceding. Would you like to know what it means? It means: existing, occurring or happening in time and place immediately before someone or something in rank, order, position, or time.

In this English vocabulary lesson you will learn how to use the word preceding. We are sure that this ESL lesson will help you to enhance your English vocabulary and speak English fluently and confidently.

The word preceding indicates someone or something which is earlier in a given sequence. It is used to express the order in which things are placed or events happened.

For example, the rainfall this is year is lesser as compared to the preceding year.

Listen carefully how we can use the word preceding in 8 different situations in 8 different sentences.

Example number 1 of 8:  The new managing committee of the trust was given a grand welcome by the preceding committee. They discussed the handover process and prepared the time schedule for the same.

Example number 2 of 8: The sales team endeavoured day and night to improve the turnover of the company. As a result, the sales figures improved by forty percent as compared to the preceding quarter. The management was elated and it announced a performance bonus for the team.

Example number 3 of 8:  The teacher emphasised that the present topic taught by her was based on the concepts learnt in the preceding chapter. Hence, she advised the students to revise the previous concepts thoroughly.

Example number 4 of 8: The consumer research company carried out a survey to understand the spending pattern of the teenagers. The findings were based on the data collected over Six months preceding the survey. This data was then made available to an online fashion clothing web store.

Example number 5 of 8:  Environment experts are warning about the rising levels of pollution across the world. Their studies also reflect that each decade is witnessing escalation in global warming as compared to preceding decade.

Example number 6 of 8: The football team had lost the preceding match by a big margin. Therefore, the coach and the captain of the team planned some tactical moves which they kept confidential till the next match.

Example number 7 of 8: Aarti was preparing for an examination of Law graduation. She approached her seniors for guidance because she was unable to understand a particular legal section. She was advised to read the section along with the preceding one for clarity. This helped her in comprehension of the same.

Example number 8 of 8: The Xmas holidays had begun and the airport authorities expected even higher turnout of passengers as compared to the preceding Xmas.  Hence, the representatives of all departments collaborated to prepare a framework for seamless movement of passengers and their safety.
