What happens when a large quantity of food is made, packaged and ready to sell only for a typo to be spotted on the label? What happens when a thousand litres of orange juice doesn’t have enough bits in it or too many bits in it, and it’s too late to fix it? A lot of the time it gets written off, turfed out, put in the bin or destroyed. The cost of food wastage and its subsequent destruction is massive in terms of the environment. But the a pandemic the opportunity loss of having all this surplus - perfectly edible food - going to waste when so many people are going hungry is even greater. Well that’s where today’s guest Iseult Ward and her co-founder Aoibheann Mangan stepped in and stepped up to create FoodCloud. A game changing local solution to the global problem of food waste by redistributing the equivalent of 160,000 meals per week.
This week on the emergency Coronapod series Jarlath sits down with Iseult to first understand how FoodCloud connects producers with charities, and then to find out how they are stepping up their game during the pandemic to provide even more to those who need it most.
