Sean said the finished master sounds dull. Could it be that the backing was done on the four track, and that was then mixed down to one track of the 2-track, with the backing vocals done on the other, then that 2-track bounced back over onto a 4-track machine, to leave 2 free tracks? The dullness is a hallmark of bouncing, and mixing down like this would mean that the bass could actually be an overdub onto one of the spare tracks, with Kevin’s vocal on the other?
Oh, and Simon Phillips (who’s drumming I love; he does a fantastic trio with Hiromi Uehara and Anthony Jackson!) sounds like his drums are very heavily compressed; you can hear the compressor kick the initial drum hits down, and then the sound of the drum shell rising just after the drum hit. Pretty signature of medium-heavy drum compression.
