That's so deep and honestly I think you're right, there's so many issues that come into play besides the mere skill at the instrument. Sometimes it's so hard to let go of the anxiety of trying to sound like someone else who you idolize or some industry standard that you feel you must adhere to. You're an example to everyone of how to find your own sound and the great thing is that you inspire people to do just that every time you play. However not everyone will be able to succeed at it, unfortunately.... I guess it's one of the hardest things to achieve in this life.
In the quest to become a working, in demand drummer (by default related to this blog) we can forget who we are and why we started in the first place. When I left school in Connecticut I returned home to discover that there was a new guy in town who basically slayed everyone. All of a sudden we all had to sound like him. And he was very compelling exactly as you are. In fact the two of you are icons of the last 3 1/2 of decades. And we lose ourselves to try to get more work. But the thing that occurred to me is that the two of you continually re-invent. You donโt accept where you are and you continually push. That is the inspirational thing. And even at my late stage of development it shows me that one can continue to go on and grow. The podcast is great please take the time to do as many as you can.
Wish Iโd heard this back in the 80s. It took me until my late forties to start thinking like this and discovering I had a โmeโ that other musicians and songwriters loved to work with. But it was always there, I got too hung up trying to emulate other players....like Vinnie.....to realise my โmeโ had a value. Iโd happily listen to Vinnie talk without seeing him play, everything any musician needs to know for direction is in this podcast.
Thank you for sharing such amazing words of wisdom absolutely love it. Can't wait to hear more
speaking like you play: always such depth and honest analysis in every thought. Eternal respect
Paraphrase: "It takes a long time to sound like yourself." Miles Davis ...dig'n your podcast, thank you Vin
