It's been a good 10-12 years since I read these books, and so I feel I was removed enough to watch these scenes with Ma Costa and Not-Tony Billy Costa without feeling like something about the storytelling was done wrong. I could just sit back and enjoy, and I thought the scenes were very well done. I shed a tear or two.
Maybe because I fell in love with the actress playing Ma Costa in the British Shameless which established her in that role as essentially a single mom, or maybe because I watched before I read, but I totally empathized with her in the scenes you found problematic. Love your takes though. Xo
