This sounds like something I've experienced sometimes in the last several decades. I did feel burning and/or pin/needle point stabbing sensations. I always assumed perhaps there was pelvic hair introduced that irritated the vagina or insufficient lubrication and or arousal for me. I'm nearing forty and have read dryness is common and does interfere with intercourse.
