Theres some useful context to this episode, which is that the monster was the winner of a kids design competition. I think a lot of the episode was written before that, and written so that a monster could just be dropped in. It doesnt solve any problems but explains some of them

Honestly, I didnt register 'doesn't she look tired' as a serious thing the first two times I watched it. I thought it was a threat, and she said 'I dont think you can do that', and internally, he was like 'well no I couldn't do that', so says something silly as a joke. Like I thought 'doesnt she look tired' was meant to be 'oh golly he said something to my second hand man, what could it have been' and the joke was that 'it was nothing'. Its kinda silly, but it does make sense.

I love this so much. Donna is the queen, and you are right on the money about Donna being the Doctor's equal, and about the writers trying so hard to make us love Clara, who came across to me as a massive Mary Sue.
