Love the program.
Went to the website to leave comment but couldn't figure out how. Anyway just listened to the episode, "The Coach in Your Head" and now believe I need a performance coach or if I had had one maybe my academic career wouldn't be where it is today!! What I have learned that I totally agree with your former coach, Billy Fitzgerald, is that students today don't want to good or great they want to be just given the information to pass exam and for you be nice not tough and teach them to think!!!
I would argue that if an individual earns 70,000 a year and cant withstand a $400 loss of income their is a distinct possibility that individual is overextended financially. The problems we face is America is that we are a nation of overindulgence. I am a Firefighter who also owns and operates a small business. Btwn my social worker wife and I we earn approx 75 to 80,000 a year. We have 3 children and manage our finances very well because we live within our means. You brought up with your guest that ppl are waiting in the SNAP offices for an hour looking at their smart phone. Maybe that's an issue. If you have a smart phone and can waste data time, you can manage your finances better. How about getting a phone that makes calls and texts only. I know I sound like an elitist with such banter but it's called money management. This is one of the problems we face as a country when we have no understanding of personal accountability. Learn how to manage life and shortfalls yourself without having to be bailed out by someone else.
That said, the whole episode felt yoked together clumsily. I can’t put my finger on why, but it lacks the cohesive flow of others in this series. (Your colleague Gladwell often has the opposite m.o. of subordinating careful analysis to the narrative)
The points you made in this episode are important. One day, they’ll probably look back on our era with bafffled intellectual amusement like we do with yellow-press fever or McCarthyism.
Just discovered this series, enjoying it. Michael, Garner pulled you up on your misuse of ”bit”. You missed the opportunity to pull him up on his choice of the word ”egregiously” and missed the chance to pull down his whole house of cards (see its archaic meaning)
