Vocal fry not annoying all -- it’s not even noticeable and I’d never heard the term bore today (January 4, 2022). What I find deeply annoying that lots of young women do is using questioning tones with statements. Example: My name is Michelle? Sometimes I hear things that are annoying?

People only hate jargon if they don’t understand it. They LOVE when it applies to their occupation or field of interest.

I have to say, I am in agreement with the hands-off approach. American chestnuts are not dead. Only the above ground portion has been affected by the blight. Plants are some of the oldest living things on earth, and I believe the American chestnut is creating its own immunity to the blight. It may seem relatively slow by human standards, but what are a few 100 years?

Also, I am wondering what percent of the time the speaker employing vocal fry, regardless of the language, is conveying something the listener would find unpleasant, and if that has anything to do with the general perception that vocal fry is annoying?

Lack of public outrage? Okay, I‘ll give you that one. Nonetheless, whether it be from men, women, insert noun here, weather decried publicly or a personally held animosity, an unnecessary drop in register is, was, and always will be annoying. Some people; find great joy in being annoying. Whether you do so or not, I enjoy your commentary. With or without vocal fry.

When used between peers within the same discipline, jargon can be quite useful. But for the most part, when used in public discourse, or even across disciplines, jargon has but one purpose. It is meant to either obscure the meaning of what is being said or make it much more likely that what is being said will not be clearly understood. Possibly both.

Couldn't resist saying, I also touch the door frame as I enter an aircraft. I think I somehow believe that if the flight is going to end badly, I will get a premonition of this by touching the aircraft door frame and be forwarded.

And even if they decide we aren't useful enough to keep around, at least we'll have the satisfaction of having invented something that lasts. Not bad for a species that's only a blip on the timeline of the universe.

I always enjoy listening to shows that discuss robotics and AI. Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and a host of others foretell the dangers of AI and robots destroying all of humanity. We've been debating for 100 years whether they are more useful or dangerous. They will likely view us the same way but come to the decision in moments rather than decades, and I'm guessing that also like us they're going to fall down on the side of useful.

I think this podcast is terrific! I truly enjoy listening to this sort of thing. I tried locating the survey on the Science Friday website in order to be able to give this feedback, but I could not locate it. That said, I truly enjoy the podcast and feel as though you need make no changes. Thanks again!
