I think one of the things that is a plot hole in this theory is our eyes. We have forward facing eyes which has a limited depth of field, compared to a majority of marine animals. We would be at a severe disadvantage as we couldn't see around us to check if a predator was coming from behind, since our blind spot is huge. If we were familial to sea apes, we'd look so much different than the theory suggests.
