Hi Gloria, yes it is sad to hear that trend. Who knows what will happen in the future though!

@Gloria : This was such an enjoyable interview! Thank you! I am saddened, however, to hear that many corporations are doing away with painted portraits. As a portrait artist myself, I fear for the future of this wonderful form of art.

That's what I do now, too, unless I have a very enthusiastic, supportive client who is really interested in the whole process. They love getting shots of each stage!

@Sharpened Artist : Hey Gloria, most of the time I don't send updates of the work in progress to the client any more. I may send one WIP at the very beginning when I just start the initial drawing, and then perhaps one at the very end. But I stopped sending incremental updates that showed a bunch of the "ugly stages". And it seems to help with customer satisfaction in my experience. :)

I did want to mention that I do give a 10% discount to family and close friends. I offer this, they don't have to ask for it. I like to do that. But everyone else pays full price and I always get a deposit up front that's non-refundable.

@Sharpened Artist : Thanks, Gloria. :)

@Gloria : The way you described working is the way I like to do it too. You mentioned that you used to send updates to your clients. Do you still do that? If not, why not?

Good observation, Gloria. I can't believe I forgot that one. I'm told by students that this is one of the things they love about Office Hours. Thanks for the comment!

@Gloria : Great tips, John! I also find that watching artists critique other people's work is great for sharpening one's own critical eye.

Hi, Lisa and John! Great episode! I'm so happy to hear you referring more to portraits, as this is my great love. Would love to hear more interviews with portrait artists, especially those who still do commissions. I do portrait commissions and I love to hear about other artists who do the same and their tips and advice and what their typical day is like. So often there are interviews with artists who do wonderful portraits but say they are no longer taking commissions, which is disappointing. An interview with a working portrait artist would be fantastic. Keep up the great work! I look forward to every episode.
