Gorilla's use a broadcast scent which let's other Gorilla's and potential rivals, threats that they are an Alpha and it is produced by several scent glands, smells can be very similar to what is reported by most witnesses. It is thought these scents allow confrontation to be avoided , whilst allowing either party to not engage in any objective violence. Basically saying here I am , stay away.
