BTW, IK kidnaps princesses because he's lonely. When he finds Marceline and forms a friendship with Abracadaniel, Finn, and Jake, he's no longer (as) lonely.
To me, Magic Man IS the trickster, in the sense that the trickster archetype is analogous to mental illness and insanity. Magic Man isn't free of anxiety, he's hopeless, and I think that hopelessness can masquerade as confidence because if you have nothing to lose, nothing scares you. It's also worth noting that MM isn't quite in control of his manipulation and vaguely psychotic tendencies. I didn't personally notice this until he was NOT Magic Man anymore. When Betty takes on his MMS (magic, madness, and sadness), Magic Man turns into...Normal Man? and he is no longer manipulative, he is no longer the trickster. As someone who has lived literally almost my whole life with major depression, it says to me that this darkness that's inside so many of us is not a void as we think, but instead sort of a black hole of magic, madness, and sadness, traits with such huge gravity that it overtakes everything else in our lives. Also, I am Magic Man because I find cruel irony hilarious.
