Great message. I’m a pastor working through this. Regarding moral, ceremonial, and civil…When I was going through Basic Chaplain Course for the Air Force I befriended an Orthodox Jew who couldn’t understand why Christians condemn homosexuality but they’re fine with eating pork. It was the first time I realized that to the Jewish mind there is no distinction between laws. They are all moral.

Thank you Ryan for your message. As we all struggle with the thought of Quarantine, Social Distance & Masks as a new normal, I'm also recognizing the old normal that remains, God's creation, the wildlife, the flowers and greenery of Spring! I love Lake Michigan and Weko where you married Cynthia and I. Now erosion is causing a new normal there that's hard for me to accept. But I believe God is Sovereign and He has a reason for allowing all of these things to happen, a time for us to learn, to seek His Face, to bring all of us to our knees (believers as well as non-believers). He is separating good from evil. He is taking the good home and allowing us to remain to continue use us as examples of His Grace and Mercy so all may be saved. I will remain and accept His new normal because He is doing a tremendous work in me! He is cleansing me and sanctifying me, preparing me for His Glory (both here and Heaven). I thank Him for creating me to be here for a time such as this! As my Cynthia would say; May His "Perfect" Will Be Done in all of us! 💖

Turning tools of violence, destruction, division into tools of peace and flourishing; look at what Jesus did with the cross so imagine what we can do from behind screens - screens as in your phone & computer.

Love hearing the parallels between our two communities and the story of Redeamer's beginnings.

I loved the way you set up and then unfolded the three readings of the passage. I was moved to tears by the enormous grace inherent in “what if the passage means exactly what it says” and all of the implications inherent in that. It was lovely that you were so clear to make a distinction between the context and now, in that women can and should seek out help now, but then in returning to the context of the pater familias and the slave owner, showing that “Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs, and there is no favoritism.” Amen! So much freedom and grace extended to the powerless individual against evil systems and structures. It was also SO beautiful to see you showing the way in which the later chapters of the very same letter show the impact of that good news and the freedom and new life that it brings as shown in the treatment of Onesimus and the mention of Nympha and her role. I love how you dealt with the inherent “contradictions” to show that these weren’t contradictions at all but signs of the gospel at work in the community and God's kingdom breaking in and transforming their lived and known reality to expand known modes of operation and resist cultural limitations!

I have struggled with this message myself. Who has the right to say what you do is worse that what I do? None of us are without sin. Only God has the right to judge. I have friends who are lgbt who love God and are the most kind, loving and giving ppl you would ever want to know. But how do you deal with the verse in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 which says the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God-the sexually immmoral, idolaters, those who practice homosexuality, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, slanderers, swindlers-none of these will inherit the kingdom of God. That’s quite a range of ppl. But I absolutely believe the church should be open to all people. If we are not showing love to all ppl we are not God’s ppl because God is Love. Also as far as leadership in the church 1 Timothy talks about qualifications for this. I think anyone in leadership needs to be beyond reproach.
