As valued, trusted members of the community, pharmacists are at the frontlines of primary health care and thus regularly interact with individuals that have a diagnosed mental illness, not yet diagnosed mental illness, or less severe symptoms not meeting a diagnosis. While pharmacy school curriculums and continuing education programs typically cover the clinical management of diagnosed conditions, students and practicing pharmacists are often not exposed how to screen, provide brief supportive intervention, and/or offer referral to further management of mental health symptoms. If pharmacy staff were equipped with such knowledge and skills, they may be able to facilitate a significant population of individuals struggling with mental health symptoms to get needed attention to effectively manage their symptoms. Please listen, learn, and share this special podcast series.
This podcast is all about the Pharmacist leveraging the power of Pharmacogenomics. PGX for Pharmacists is a member of the Pharmacy Podcast Network. Pharmacogenomics is the study of the role of the genome in drug response. Its name (pharmaco- + genomics) reflects its combining of pharmacology and genomics. Pharmacogenomics analyzes how the genetic makeup of an individual affects his/her response to drugs. It deals with the influence of acquired and inherited genetic variation on drug response in patients by correlating gene expression or single-nucleotide polymorphisms with pharmacokinetics (drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination) and pharmacodynamics (effects mediated through a drug's biological targets).
Pharmacy benefit managers were created as middlemen to reduce administrative costs for insurers, validate a patient’s eligibility, administer plan benefits, and negotiate costs between pharmacies and health plans. Over time, PBMs have been allowed to operate virtually unchecked. A lack of transparency in PBM practices has led several states to implement licensure/registration, fair pharmacy audit, or generic drug pricing legislation to try to level the playing field for pharmacies and patients. by the NCPA https://www.ncpanet.org/advocacy/state-advocacy/pbm-reform This Podcast is focusing on discussions & interviews about PBM Reform & those "Business of Pharmacy" professionals leading this much needed reform.

What is medical marijuana? The term medical marijuana refers to using the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts to treat symptoms of illness and other conditions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not recognized or approved the marijuana plant as medicine. However, scientific study of the chemicals in marijuana, called cannabinoids, has led to two FDA-approved medications that contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill form. Continued research may lead to more medications. Because the marijuana plant contains chemicals that may help treat a range of illnesses and symptoms, many people argue that it should be legal for medical purposes. In fact, a growing number of states have legalized marijuana for medical use. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been recently covered in the media, and you may have even seen it as an add-in booster to your post-workout smoothie or morning coffee. What exactly is CBD?
