Inherent Goodness of Humans, Loneliness and Community

I read a passage from Rousseau’s Emile arguing that human beings are naturally satisfied with themselves when they do good (and that the lack of such memories would make a person wicked). We consider Patric Gagne’s experience (Sociopath) as a possible reposte to Rousseau’s hypothesis. We reflect on Benjamin Franklin’s observation that colonial captives of the American Indians returned did not want to stay, but that the same was not true going the other direction. Whether natural or social, from goodness we go on to talk about loneliness and community and how to possibly facilitate the latter, bringing Jared Diamond’s The World Until Yesterday a bit into the conversation.
