The Brothers Grimm’s “Maid Maleen”

Maid Maleen, denied her true love, is shut up in a tower.  After seven  years, she and her maid emerge to a destroyed castle and town.  They wander the countryside, denied refuge and surviving on nettles.  Finally, they are given kitchen work.  This happens to be in her beloved prince’s kingdom, and he is to be betrothed to a princess whose heart was as ugly as her face.  This one, ashamed, has Maid Maleen pose as her during the wedding.  MM says a ditty at each threshold, catching the ear of the confused prince.  These later serve to authenticate her identity and expose the other one, who tries to have MM killed, but who is executed instead.  We think this story pits the political versus the truth and has the truth win out.  How often among the high and mighty does it prevail?
