Fr. Brian Soliven Sunday Sermons

What makes for a good solider also makes for a good Christian. Discipline, obedience, selflessness are all qualities we hope to see in those who serve our nation. When these virtues go "above and beyond the call of duty" we bestow the rare Medal of Honor upon them. Out of the 40 million men and women who have served in the history of our military, fewer than 3600 have received such a recognization. As in the Gospel parable we heard this Sunday, these recipients did not bury their talents in the ground like the "wicked and lazy servant." No. They gave themselves away in love for the other. They showed the greatest love by laying down their lives for one's friend. In other words, they behaved like someone we know. Can you think who that might be? We are reminded of this person every time we look at a cross. Now, live the same way.
