What's happening, Zengineers?
This week, we're chasing our previous episodes on experts and experiments, by talking about STEAM Education!! Have you heard of it? Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Philosophy... It's quite the popular acronym recently. You may even recognize some of it from our own Podcast title. Yes, we're big fans of those five things, and we think you might be too!! If you're not, then we hope that at least you can enjoy some of our enthusiasm for the subjects in this week's episode.
We start by introducing an amazing class Adam and Brian were lucky enough to have together as kids, called Math-Science. It's there we both agree we were first exposed to a hybrid class of creative discovery of Science and Math. We introduce STEM and STEAM, and then we dig in on the teaching of history. Why do we teach it and what surprising impacts does it have on our Scientific / Technological schooling? Do we have to tell certain stories on purpose just to counter the stories coming from other places? What role does school and education have in this? People want stories about where they came from. History is part of that.
How did STEAM education work for the people that are now adults? What's it look like now? How is STEAM being exposed to the general population these days, and what changes could take place to increase excitement and adoption? We chase down why some educators favor STEM, and also why WE believe it's so important to study in today's world. Stem, and indeed, much of academia, present questions that are just forever unsolvable or at least will remain somewhat ambiguous. For this reason, it's important that the A be added and remain in STEM. It's the creativity that really brings everything together.
Finally we present the idea of a truth gradient that draws from the philosophical and takes us over to the scientific with every little bit of knowledge, experience, and understanding falling somewhere on this two dimensional chart. Something we really enjoyed chasing. We hope it comes across clearly in the cast. We realize that it's “the stories of the people at the edge” that generate all the excitement ... studying their history, and recognizing them in our presence ... but it's our own job to stay informed and continue learning throughout our lives. STEAM education, like all education, should never end. You're ultimately your own and your best teacher.
