Q1: From the archive: Yes, the stock market is crashing–here’s what to do about it

Linda examines the most recent jobs report–and while we added 228,000 jobs to the market, the unemployment rate increased from 4.1% to 4.2%. Normally, positive jobs numbers would be reflected positively in the stock market, but the market isn’t celebrating at all. Trump’s tariffs and resulting reciprocal tariffs from trading partners like China are causing stock market chaos.

Speaking of stock market chaos… We’ve been waiting and wondering if and when the market was going to crash. It is now. This is not the time to sell off your entire portfolio. This is the time to hold on–that will only cause the stock market to crash further. This is the time to invest in those blue chip stocks that you normally can’t afford. This is the time to hold fast and have patience, and manage your emotions as an investor. Remember: we’ve seen market crashes before. We’re currently headed towards a bear market, which means that yes, the stock market is crashing, or has crashed (depending on when you listen to this). And yes, the catalyst is Trump’s tariffs, and the possibility of a full-blown global trade war.
