Money Career & Motherhood Podcast
Kids & Family:Parenting
What if rock bottom for your spouse meant your family must risk it all in hopes of getting them the care they need? Could you walk away from your comfortable life for them to get the help they need? Danielle Bettmann, wife, mother, parenting coach, podcast host and this week’s brave guest, is sharing her story as the wife of a husband who suffers from alcoholism. She talks about discovering the extent of his disease, what it felt like to try to carry on as normal with those around her during this battle, and the difficult decision to sell the family home to pay for the in-patient treatment her husband needed to get sober.
The in-patient treatment did work. Danielle’s husband is celebrating 3.5 years sober, while Danielle and her family are in love with their downsized life and their continued focus on people and experiences versus things.
As many as 76 million Americans (around 45 percent of the population) have been exposed to some form of alcoholism or alcoholic behaviors in their family; and as many as 26.8 million of those people are children. Despite its frequency, those who haven’t experienced it firsthand may not realize how close alcoholism is to the ones they know and love, while those struggling with the impact of the disease on their family can feel alone in their struggles. Alcoholism is a disease that affects all family members, and the impact goes beyond relationships.
If you believe that you or a loved one may be suffering from alcoholism, please get help by contacting Alcoholics Anonymous, Al-Anon, or a local treatment center.
