Hosted by Nigel May, whose guest today is Paul Burston, journalist and author and a man who has been described as the senior statesman of queer culture.
He edited the LGBT section of Time Out magazine for many years and is the author of many best-selling books. He is also the curator and host of the award winning Polari Literary salon and founder of the Polari Prize book awards for LGBTQ+ writers.
He has been on the frontline promoting freedom, equality and LGBGTQ+ rights around the world for decades. He is a Rainbow List National treasure and former AIDS activist with ACT UP London. Alongside ACT UP, Paul also worked with the Gay London Police Monitoring Group (GALOP) where he would answer calls from the organisation’s switchboard.
His memoir We Can be Heroes is essential reading and has been described as “an illuminating memoir of the 80s 90s and noughties from a gay man who only just survived them.” Without Paul, our community would not be where it is today…
This series is a celebration of a beautiful queer community; people of all ages, people who have had to tread their own path to live their real truth, who have fought with their emotions and emerged victorious, who inspire, who aspire and always entertain.
Every week, Nigel speaks to a person from the LGBTQ+ rainbow to hear their story; one person, one life, one conversation. And guaranteed, a Gay Old Time!
