EP.13 Metadata and Social Justice

Metadata can be broadly defined as a representative or a surrogate data/information to describe an entity of interest (e.g., person, organization, animal, objects, and concepts). Not only library and information professionals, everyone are often manage and manipulate metadata constantly in different contexts and capacities. In many contexts, including library and information science, standardization of description practices and knowledge representation (e.g., controlled vocabulary), particularly based on the euro-american perspective, is one of the most common and active practices in metadata organization. In this first English episode, Dr.Hollie White from the School of Media, Creative Arts and Social Inquiry, Curtin University in Perth, Australia shares her interests in studying the influence of metadata creation and organization on social justice and how her studies applies to Thai cataloging practices. Recommendations for library and information professionals to improve fairness and promote social justice are also discussed.
