Current Events that Really aren’t that Current

How close do events need to be to be considered current? The events from my life yesterday are past? Is my childbirth considered current since I'm closer to the day of my birth than near the end of my sweet release? Why is it called an event and not moments or time periods that just so happen to be recently filled with things that happened? No...that's too long.
