Urban issues with Damian Madigan

How do you densify housing in established suburbs, without destroying character? That's something Associate Professor of Architecture at Adelaide University Damian Madigan has been grappling with, and says he has a solution for. He has devised the concept of 'bluefields' which - essentially - is instead of just building a granny flat in your backyard, or bowling an older home to build multiple 4-bedroom townhouses, houses can be extended and divided to become two or three separate titles, while keeping a shared garden. He says this also solves the issue of older people not being able to find suitable homes to downsize in their area, letting them stay in their existing homes and freeing up more of their capital. Zoning to enable this has now been adopted by councils in South Australia, as well as the state government.
