This week Mike and Oteil chat with legendary rock photographer Jay Blakesberg. You'll hear the guys talk about Jay's new visual autobiography RetroBlakesberg, his early days as a photographer shooting alternative rock bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Soundgarden, and why he loves shooting artists consistently throughout their careers. You'll also hear Jay tell the guys about some of his favorite moments shooting the Grateful Dead, the differences between digital and film photography, and much more. Jay is best known for his amazing photos of the Grateful Dead and nearly every other jamband to play over the last 40 years, and in this episode he tells the guys all about his wild ride as a rock n' roll photographer.
Jay Blakesberg is a San Francisco-based photographer, filmmaker, and public speaker whose work has been featured in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Relix and numerous other magazines. He has worked with countless musical artists, including Neil Young, Radiohead, Phish, Joni Mitchell, The Flaming Lips, Tom Waits, the Rolling Stones, Carlos Santana and, of course, the Grateful Dead to name just a few. Blakesberg first started documenting life with a camera in 1978 at age 16. His 16th coffee table book, RetroBlakesberg is available Wednesday, September 28th.
